This morning Upper School students enjoyed a thought-provoking panel discussion about AI with invited guests in STEM, the arts, and the humanities. North Cross was honored to host Cindy Petersen, Executive Director of the Taubman Museum of Art; Sarah Henrickson Parker, Research Professor and Chair of Health Systems and Implementation Science at the VA Tech Carilion School of Medicine; Sam Strulson '95, Vice President for Booz Allen Hamilton; and Ted Blain, novelist and former Woodberry Forest English Department Chair. Anna Ciccozzi '26 and Kaleb Robinson '26 served as our student moderators as our panelists spoke about the ways in which AI is informing and impacting their professional fields. Panelists emphasized the importance of critical thinking, the human ability to discern nuance, and ways in which AI can more deeply enhance the human experience.

#ncsparentsassociation #fundraiser #whatsfordinnerToday was a special day in Willis Hall! Our 8th graders experienced firsthand what it's like to be an Upper School student during our inaugural Shadow Day. They attended classes, participated in Assembly, and even witnessed the first Faculty/Student Cup competition of the year. While the faculty claimed victory this time, the students are already plotting their comeback.
#WillisHall #upperschoollife #ShadowDay #facultystudentcupEaton Hall brought back Sporty Sidekicks after many years! 7th graders and 1st graders were paired up during PE class yesterday where they had to find their buddy by acting like a certain animal and then they made up a secret handshake. They will meet together about once a month with a focus on sportsmanship.

The Halloween parade is alive and well at North Cross! A cherished tradition, the Halloween Parade began in the days of Billy Northcross Ellis, who as Headmistress would dress as a witch and lead the Lower School through campus. Today North Cross’s leadership team — here dressed as Minions — led the entire Lower School through a crowd of parents, Middle and Upper School students, faculty, and staff. All were hosted to hot cider afterwards by the Parents’ Association. We hope everyone has a safe and happy Halloween!

Through SignupGenius, we have compiled a list of items requested directly by the families to help with basic needs and the rebuilding of their community.
Please follow the SignupGenius link below to help fill the trailer with supplies by 8:00am, Friday, October 11th. Lower School families may bring supplies to your students' classrooms. #veteransday🇺🇸 #thankaveteran❤️ #goodybagsMore Election Day activities on the NCS campus today: in honor of learning about democracy and voting, third grade conducted a mock election between Reese cups and Skittles. After watching ads for each sweet treat, they voted in the voting booth. Skittles won the majority vote in both third grade classes. The voters had a chance to taste their success, plus wear a sticker to show they participated. The excitement was palpable as each student was asked their first and last name as they were given their ballot to cast. It was certainly a fun way to learn about elections!
#civics #experientiallearningIn celebration of Election Day, JK5 participated in a delicious activity where they tasted chocolate and vanilla ice cream and then used ballots to individually vote at a pretend voting booth. The votes were tallied and vanilla won the election!

We are bursting with gratitude this morning! Thanks to our incredibly generous North Cross families and friends, we were able to fill not just one, but TWO trailers full of supplies for victims of Hurricane Helene in Newland, NC!! We are so thankful for all who worked to pull this incredible relief effort off in a very short amount of time. Special thanks go to Mr. Belderes and Ms. Taylor, as well as @healingstrides for coordinating this project.
#hurricanehelene #givingback #northcarolina #healingstridesofvaMr. Brasil's chemistry students performed flame tests today in order to identify metal ions based on the characteristic colors they emit when heated in a flame. This activity demonstrates how electrons absorb energy, become excited, and then release energy as light, producing specific wavelengths and colors unique to each element. By observing these colors, students reinforce their understanding of atomic emission spectra and electron transitions, while developing their observational and analytical skills.
#chemistry #ChemLab #STEM #scienceexperimentsThank you to everyone who has brought us Hurricane Helene relief supplies this week! Our students have been busy loading the trailer, which, thanks to @healingstrides, will depart for Newland, NC tomorrow morning at 8 AM.
If you have not had a chance to drop supplies by, there is still time! We'll be here until 6:30 tonight to accept donations of:
sugar, flour, cooking oil, Crisco, Gatorade, salt, farm eggs, work gloves, coats, stocking caps/hats, portable heaters, large storage bins/totes, and cases of bottled water.
As Ms. Taylor said, "I have never been more proud to be part of a community that gives with such a big heart. We are small but mighty, and I know we can fill this trailer by Friday! We epitomize what it is to be American Strong!”

#ncsalumni #alumnilegacypicnic #alumnilegacies #oncearaideralwaysaraider❤️On Wednesday, 5th graders headed to Ferrum College to learn more about hydroponics. Students learned about pH (what levels plants like and how to test the nutrient solution), what plants grow best in the different types of systems, and how to care for seedlings. They saw a hydroponics system in action and asked many questions as they analyzed the working parts. To top it all off, many of them got to try some fresh lettuce right out of the system! #ncsfineartsdepartment #peterpan #musicaltheatre #performingartsMiddle school Spanish students recently hosted Lower School Spanish students for Day of the Dead activities!
El Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is not just the continuation of Halloween, despite some of the holidays’ similarities. Taking place on November 1st and November 2nd every year, the Day of the Dead is a special time of year when, according to some cultures, loved ones emerge from the afterlife to visit and reunite with their families on Earth.
It’s celebrated primarily in Mexico, though other countries in Central America, Brazil, Spain and Mexican-American communities throughout the U.S. also join in on the festivities.

#goraiders #raiderpride❤️🖤 #athleticboosters #fundraiser #deckthehallsNorth Cross School's Cub Scout Pack #23 is having a fun and busy fall! They recently celebrated National Fire Prevention Month with Roanoke County Fire & Rescue Station where firefighters showed off the pumper truck and ambulance. They answered lots of questions, demonstrated the equipment, and allowed the scouts to investigate inside the vehicles. Fire hats and stickers were given to the scouts, and the scouts thanked the firefighters with a popcorn gift!
